The new Nissan Ariya electric car from 47,400 euros
The Nissan Ariya is the new electric crossover SUV from the Japanese company, an electric car based on the Ariya concept that Nissan revealed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Last year, Japan was the first place where the final production model went on sale. A few months later, it hit the European market.
The 2022 Nissan Ariya features an entirely new design language that has allowed, among other things, to introduce the renewed Nissan logo. We find a slim and sharp optical group with LED technology starting at the front. Emulating the classic shape of Nissan's V-Motion front grille, we see a black section that brings together the logo and daytime running lights. The sculpted bumper has oversized air intakes at each end, and a big, open area at the bottom painted black.
From the side, you can notice the wheel arches in the same gloss black material, clean rounded lines, the battery charging point in the front fender, door-mounted mirrors, a black coupé-style descending roof, and 19-inch wheels in a five-spoke design and aerodynamic cut (a set of 20-inch wheels is also available as an option). And from the rear, we can see a double shark fin on the roof, a large upper spoiler, a sloping rear window, a light cluster that runs the entire width of the vehicle and integrates the 'Nissan' name, a tailgate in a reasonably flat design, and a gloss black-coated bumper. The Ariya is available in six bi-color exterior combinations, each with a black roof and four striking color combinations. In addition, the Akatsuki copper-colored two-tone outer package is also offered.
Regarding the measurements of the Nissan Ariya, we find an electric SUV with a length of 4,595 mm, a width of 1,850 mm, and a height of 1,660 mm, all on a platform with a wheelbase of 2,775 mm. It is 95mm shorter, 30mm wider, and 50mm lower than the Nissan X-Trail, with a 70mm longer wheelbase.
As for the interior of the 2022 Nissan Ariya, we find a minimalist and straightforward technological approach. An excellent example of this is the double 12.3-inch screen for the information and entertainment system and the digital instrument panel. The steering wheel with two horizontal spokes and many built-in switches. The center console has as few physical buttons as possible, and many of them are now tactile and give haptic feedback. Further down, separated from the center console as it does not have a traditional transmission, we find a lower console that integrates a small glove box, a lever to manage the electric transmission, and some additional switches. The same happens in the lower left of the dashboard, right next to the steering wheel, where you can find other buttons to control different security systems and driving assistants. The 2022 Nissan Ariya offers various upholstery and trims options and a boot with a volume of 468 liters. The total volume is unknown once the rear seats are lowered. It includes space for up to five passengers in the cabin.
Under the body of the new Ariya lies a wide range of all-electric powertrains designed to satisfy the needs of all types of drivers. Five main car models are obtainable, including two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.
The first model offers an electric engine with 160 kW (218 hp) of power and 300 Nm of torque; it is powered by a 63 kWh battery that allows it to cross up to 360 km on a single charge. The second model increases the electric motor's power to 178 kW (242 hp), while the maximum torque stays at 300 Nm. In addition, the battery gains in size to 87 kWh, and its autonomy enhances by up to 500 kilometers, data calculated according to the WLTP standard. The third model already includes the e-4ORCE propulsion system, which comprises two electric motors that allow the creation of an electric all-wheel-drive system. The first option has a maximum power of 205 kW (279 hp) and a torque of 560 Nm. The battery, in this case, is the 63 kWh one, which allows you to travel up to 340 kilometers on a single charge.
Nissan also offers two more combinations of this mechanical e-4ORCE. The first delivers 225 kW (306 hp) of power and a maximum torque of 600 Nm. It is powered by an 87 kWh battery with which it travels up to 460 km on a single charge. The second, called Ariya e-4ORCE Performance, reaches 290 kW (394 hp) of power and maintains torque at 600 Nm. It also has an 87 kWh battery, but its range has been cut to 400 km since its performance has gone up.
The Nissan Ariya has a towing capacity of 1,500 kilograms. In terms of recharging times, the 63 kWh battery version includes a 7.4 kW charger for home use, while the 87 kWh battery option offers a 22 kW three-phase charger for home charging. It also supports fast charging up to 130 kW. On the other hand, three driving modes have been designed—Standard, Sport, and ECO—(the e-4ORCE models include a fourth Snow mode) with which the driver can manage the vehicle's behavior.
At the same time, the Nissan Ariya is a technological showcase for the Japanese manufacturer. The Nissan Ariya electric SUV has integrated all kinds of novelties, security systems, and driving assistants to show the world its power as a manufacturer. In this way, the Ariya boasts Nissan's well-known ProPILOT system, a technology that manages steering, acceleration, and braking to offer a semi-autonomous motorway driving system.
ProPILOT Park is a parking aid system, and the e-Pedal allows driving in most situations without applying the brake pedal. In contrast, other technologies such as the Nissan Intelligent Protection Shield, a 360-degree camera, the Forward Collision Control, the front collision avoidance system, and the rear collision avoidance system are also available on the new model.
On the other hand, Nissan's electric SUV offers the latest in connectivity solutions, highlighting the arrival of wireless updates, voice recognition, the route planner, the NissanConnect mobile application, or the accommodation of parameters (air conditioning, seat position, or lighting) predetermined by the driver, to name just a few examples.
The new Nissan Ariya will have to face a great wave of rivals, stronger and more prepared each time. We find models such as the BMW iX3; the new Volkswagen ID.4; the Kia e-Niro; the Jaguar I-Pace; the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT; the Lexus UX 300e; the new Skoda Enyaq; the Tesla Model Y or the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
The price of the Nissan Ariya has not been revealed for Europe yet, but it will arrive in Japan in mid-2021 for 5 million yen, which is equivalent to about 40,000 euros.
